A Beginner's Roadmap to Chinese Tea (Start Here)
Chinese tea looks intimidating, but you can enjoy it with almost no equipment. Here is a clear roadmap.
Step 1: Pick One Easy Tea
Start with green tea (Longjing) or a gentle oolong (Tie Guan Yin). Avoid chasing rare or expensive teas early.
Step 2: Get a Basic Vessel
A porcelain gaiwan (100–150 ml) or even a glass mug is enough. Skip elaborate sets.
Step 3: Control Two Variables
Just two things decide most of your results:
- Water temperature (cooler for green/white, hot for oolong/black/pu-erh)
- Steep time (shorter = less bitter)
Step 4: Taste Deliberately
Brew the same tea at different times. Notice how 30 seconds vs 3 minutes changes everything. Build your aroma memory.
Step 5: Expand Slowly
Once you like one tea, try its neighbors: from green, explore white and yellow; from oolong, explore black and pu-erh.
What You Do NOT Need
- An expensive teapot
- A scale (eyeball 1 teaspoon per cup to start)
- Dozens of teas at once
The Mindset
Chinese tea is less about rules and more about attention. Brew, taste, adjust, repeat. Within a month you will know more than most casual drinkers.
Start today with one good tea and one cup. That is the whole roadmap.
